Develops students' competence and self-confidence as design engineers. Emphasis on the creative design process bolstered by application of physical laws. Instruction on how to complete projects on schedule and within budget. Robustness and manufacturability are emphasized. Subject relies on active learning via a major design-and-build project. Lecture topics include idea generation, estimation, concept selection, visual thinking, computer-aided design (CAD), mechanism design, machine elements, basic electronics, technical communication, and ethics.
After giving us a set of tools and limitiations on the raw stock and power consumption we could have, we were set free to make individual Autonomous/RC robots with the goal of gettting the most points on the Willy Wonka themed game board.
My Robot incorporated a ping sensor, along with a few motors and gears/gear racks to be able to accomplish the task of lifting both the heavy and light (massive) gummybears on the field autonomously.
Must exert the force necessary to lift the gummy bears high enough without tipping over the robot; ie. dealing with moment balance and COM adjustment, as well as calculations to find the right gear ratios for my motors.
Fitting the constraints of the amount of raw stock we could use and the max size and weight of our robots.
In order to model this, I used solidworks. In order to fabricate, I used a laser cutter, CNC mill, Lathe, and various handtools.
